Paper Quality and Digital Copier Performance

Many companies never think through all the many things that can impact their print environment—and their company’s bottom line. When it comes to digital copiers, one thing that can have a significant impact is the quality of the paper that is used. Poor quality input leads to poor copier performance overall.

Let’s take a closer look at the relationship between paper and copier.

Quality in. Quality out. It’s the rule.

You’ve heard the expression “quality in, quality out” a million times. Well, when it comes to digital copiers, it is definitely the truth. Putting poor quality paper in your digital copier leads to many issues you’d rather not deal with, including:

  • Ouch. Jams.  (No one likes dealing with copier and printer jams)
  • System downtime (and time is money, remember)
  • User frustration, and much more

There are some tips you can both use and share that can help avoid these issues.

Loading your digital copier matters

When loading paper in to your digital copier, there are a few tips that can make a difference. The paper you load should be fanned to loosen any pages that are sticking together and ensure smooth output. Also be sure to check for any special instructions that might be on the packaging that suggest proper loading for the best print performance.

Storage matters, too (both how you store and where)

How the paper is stored also impacts its quality. Is the paper being stored in a dry location?  Is it stored inside or outside of the original packaging? Have the edges begun to curl up? (a sure indicator that paper jams are coming.) Keeping copier paper stored properly can avoid much frustration and waste down the road. Dry, closed spaces like closets or enclosed cabinets that allow for careful storage are ideal.
